Use of SCHMITT Pumps in Cold Stores

Background and Challenge

Cold stores and industrial refrigeration systems use secondary circuits between the cooling plant, storage system and consumers. Typical fluids include water/glycol mixtures, suitable secondary refrigerants, process water and approved heat-transfer fluids.

Primary refrigerants such as ammonia, CO₂ or fluorinated refrigerants are explicitly not promoted as pumped fluids on this page.

Challenge

As temperature decreases, viscosity and density change, affecting the pump curve, power consumption and required motor rating. Low temperatures also limit the suitability of materials, elastomers and sealing systems. Condensation and moisture must be considered when selecting the motor, enclosure rating and installation.

Solution

The material and pump series are selected according to the fluid, concentration and minimum temperature. As a guide based on current series data, PP versions are suitable from 0 °C, the specified PVDF versions from −5 °C, and stainless-steel UP and UP-DO pumps from −20 °C. Lower temperatures or other fluids require explicit approval of the specific series, materials, elastomers and seal.

UP and UP-DO are intended for conventional water/glycol circuits. Depending on the material, T and, on request, TE are suitable for tank and sump applications. NEOCHEM CORE/BASE is used for chemically demanding cooling fluids only after specific approval; current series data states a minimum fluid temperature of 0 °C.
