Use of Schmitt centrifugal pumps in gas scrubbers and exhaust gas cleaning

Background to the task

Gas scrubbers are used in many industries to remove pollutants from exhaust gases. For this purpose, the exhaust gas is brought into contact with a scrubbing liquid, which binds the pollutants chemically or physically.

For this process to function reliably, the washing solution must be continuously pumped, distributed and returned. Centrifugal pumps perform the central task of moving the fluid through nozzles, packing elements and reaction stages and maintaining stable circulation.

Challenge

  • The scrubbing fluids used can be aggressive – ranging from alkaline or acidic solutions to saline, oxidising or chemically reactive fluids.
  • Solids often form during operation, e.g. reaction products, sediments or gypsum fractions, which place mechanical stress on the pump.
  • Gas scrubbers are often operated continuously. High availability of the pump technology is therefore essential.
  • The temperature of the fluid can vary, and the system is sensitive to fluctuations in pressure or flow rate.
  • The pump must suit the installation situation – whether next to a tank, in a sump or directly in the scrubbing vessel.

A standard pump is often only partially able to meet these requirements. A stable exhaust gas cleaning process requires robust, chemically resistant and operationally reliable solutions.

Solution

Schmitt centrifugal pumps are designed for precisely this operating environment. Their design and material selection are based on the real requirements of gas scrubbers – from aggressive fluids to scrubbing solutions containing solids.

  1. Recirculation of the scrubbing liquid In gas scrubbers, the scrubbing solution must be kept in continuous circulation. Schmitt pumps deliver a stable flow rate, even over longer pipe runs or against higher system resistance. This ensures uniform wetting throughout the scrubber.
  2. Supply of spray and distribution systems Many systems operate with nozzles or atomisers. For these to function optimally, they must be supplied with the fluid uniformly. Schmitt pumps generate the required head for this and reliably keep the pressure constant.
  3. Handling contaminated fluids or fluids containing some solids Thanks to the unique plain bearing design with high-quality silicon carbide as standard, which unlike competitor designs does not require a vulnerable ceramic plug-in axle or shaft, our pumps are also highly suitable for abrasive solid particles in these processes.

The available designs – horizontal pumps, vertical immersion pumps and self-priming versions – allow Schmitt pumps to be integrated effectively into a wide range of plant layouts. Depending on the fluid, temperature-resistant and chemically resistant materials such as PP, PVDF or stainless steel are used. Schmitt pumps operate reliably in continuous operation, are easy to maintain and ensure stable, uniform operation of the entire gas scrubbing process.
